The US State Department said Iraq is entering a new phase under Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, expressing Washington’s readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation and build a stronger partnership based on shared interests.
A State Department spokesperson said the Trump administration supports the Iraqi government’s efforts to secure a better future for its people, prevent Iraqi territory from being used to launch attacks, and strengthen long-term US-Iraqi cooperation.
The comments come as Baghdad and Washington continue to reshape their security relationship following an agreement to end the international coalition’s military mission in Iraq and gradually move toward a bilateral security partnership.
The first phase of the coalition’s withdrawal was completed in September 2025, while the final phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2026.
The international coalition was established in 2014 to support Iraqi forces in their fight against ISIS. Its role later shifted mainly toward training, advising, and intelligence assistance.
