European Union Ambassador to Iraq Clemens Semtner has reiterated the bloc’s commitment to supporting Iraq in economic reform, combating corruption and strengthening state control over weapons.

Semtner announced that the third Iraqi National Trade and Investment Forum will open in Baghdad on Wednesday, bringing together dozens of European companies and hundreds of Iraqi businesses.

Speaking at an EU-hosted event celebrating the partnership and friendship between the European Union and Iraq, Semtner said the bloc would continue to serve as a trusted partner. He also recalled the EU’s support for Iraq during the war against ISIS and its assistance in enabling millions of displaced people to return to their homes.

He stressed that the European Union is prepared to expand cooperation with Iraq to promote inclusive economic growth, diversify the national economy, address climate change and encourage the development of modern technologies.

Semtner explained that the forum, organized in cooperation with Iraq’s Ministry of Trade, will bring Iraqi and European businesses together to explore investment opportunities and strengthen economic relations.

He also acknowledged the challenges facing the new Iraqi government, led by Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, emphasizing the EU’s willingness to support its efforts to implement economic reforms, tackle corruption and reinforce the state’s authority.

Semtner concluded that Iraq possesses considerable potential to achieve a stable and prosperous future, highlighting the importance of closer cooperation between Baghdad and the European Union.

The event took place at Al-Mansour Theatre in Baghdad, with the participation of the foreign minister, government officials, members of parliament, diplomatic representatives and business figures from Iraq and Europe.
