Iraq’s Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna Al-Tamimi, announced on Monday that the country had formally submitted a bid to host the 18th session of the Arab Ministerial Water Council, stressing the ministry’s readiness to organize the event and strengthen Arab coordination on water security.
In a statement, the Ministry of Water Resources said Al-Tamimi led Iraq’s delegation to the council’s 17th session in Egypt, attended by water ministers, officials and representatives of the League of Arab States.
Al-Tamimi underscored the need to strengthen cooperation among Arab countries and exchange expertise to address shared water challenges. He also highlighted the main pressures facing Iraq, including declining water inflows, reduced water reserves and increasing salinity levels.
The minister further outlined government measures to improve water management, minimize losses, rehabilitate irrigation and drainage networks, and expand the adoption of modern irrigation technologies to make more efficient use of available resources.
As part of efforts to broaden regional cooperation, Iraq submitted its official request to host the next session. The ministry reaffirmed its preparedness to organize the meetings and contribute to joint Arab initiatives aimed at strengthening water security.
The 17th session also addressed draft resolutions and recommendations designed to deepen cooperation among Arab countries and develop common approaches to the region’s water challenges.
