The French Presidency has outlined the main issues expected to be discussed by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi and President Emmanuel Macron during Zaidi’s visit to Paris on Sunday, his first trip to Europe.
According to the Élysée, the talks will focus on expanding bilateral cooperation in priority sectors, including energy, transport, infrastructure, water and healthcare, alongside stronger cooperation in security and defense. Several contracts may also be signed during the visit, although their details have not been disclosed.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss developments surrounding the international coalition’s mission against ISIS and reaffirm their commitment to sustained counterterrorism efforts aimed at preventing the group from rebuilding its capabilities, while respecting the sovereignty of both countries.
Regional instability and its impact on trade and energy supplies will also feature prominently in the talks, particularly Iraq’s oil exports. Paris and Baghdad are expected to explore measures to restore those flows, support Iraq’s economy and help ease pressure on global energy markets and French consumers.
