Iraq’s Council of Representatives held its 26th session on Thursday, chaired by Heibet Al-Halbousi and attended by 261 lawmakers, to address the completion of the government cabinet and vote on candidates for deputy prime minister positions.
Meanwhile, a group of MPs voiced opposition to creating additional deputy prime minister posts or establishing new ministries on the basis of political power-sharing, stressing the need to control public expenditure and take the country’s financial circumstances into account.
Speaking at a press conference inside parliament alongside lawmakers from several political blocs, MP Haider Al-Mutairi said Iraq’s public funds should not be used to serve the interests of political parties. He confirmed that the group would oppose any vote to establish new deputy prime minister positions.
The voting session on completing the cabinet, filling deputy prime minister posts, and approving newly established ministries was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, as objections continued over expanding the government structure and the potential additional financial burden.
