Iraqi Ministry of Defense spokesperson Major General Yahya Rasool said on Friday that completing and upgrading the country’s air defense systems remains the foremost priority in its military procurement plans, in accordance with directives from Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi.

Rasool stated that the ministry is implementing structured plans to strengthen the capabilities of various branches of the armed forces, including air defense, the air force, army aviation, reconnaissance, and other military specialties.

He explained that technical committees have visited several advanced countries to examine their military technology and weapons capabilities, assess available options, and identify systems that meet the operational requirements of Iraq’s armed forces.

The spokesperson emphasized that enhancing air defense capabilities is the main priority set by the commander-in-chief. He added that the ministry is continuing to review available alternatives and select systems capable of improving air defense efficiency and protecting Iraqi airspace.

Rasool noted that the technical committees would continue assessing weapons and military technologies ahead of decisions on new procurement contracts and further capability development. He stressed that details of arms agreements, imports, and deliveries would be announced officially after the required procedures are completed.

He added that the ministry’s modernization strategy also covers the air force, army aviation, and reconnaissance, alongside air defense, as part of broader efforts to improve military readiness and strengthen the country’s defense establishment.

Regarding the ministry’s leadership, Rasool said Defense Minister Nayef Al-Shammari had taken office after receiving parliamentary approval. He affirmed that the ministry would continue developing military capabilities and implementing its established modernization plans.
