The Al-Karkh Criminal Court has sentenced six French nationals to life imprisonment and handed a seventh French defendant a 15-year prison sentence after convicting them of membership in the terrorist organization ISIS. The rulings were issued in the presence of their defense attorneys and representatives of the French Embassy in Iraq.

In a statement, Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council said the defendants were classified as highly dangerous due to the threat they posed to Iraqi national security, their involvement in destabilizing Iraq and Syria, and their alleged role in inciting terrorist attacks in other countries.

The statement noted that the seven defendants were among a group of 47 French nationals transferred to Iraqi authorities from northeastern Syria last year. The First Al-Karkh Investigation Court investigated their cases before referring them to the competent court in accordance with legal procedures.
