An informed government source said on Wednesday that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is expected to visit Lebanon and Syria next week at the head of an official delegation to discuss several key issues of mutual interest.
According to the source, Lebanon will be the first destination, followed by Syria, before al-Zaidi returns to Baghdad.
The planned visits follow al-Zaidi’s trip to Riyadh last Wednesday as part of a Gulf tour that also includes Kuwait. The tour comes after an earlier visit to Saudi Arabia, scheduled for July, was cancelled amid escalating regional security developments, including a US strike on Popular Mobilization Forces facilities in Iraq, reportedly involving Saudi participation, according to the original text.
The diplomatic moves come as Baghdad navigates a cautious regional environment, particularly in its relations with Gulf states. Tensions have persisted since regional military operations began in February 2026, amid allegations that armed factions have used Iraqi territory to launch drone attacks targeting economic interests across the region.
