US Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday linked the Republican Party’s sweeping defeat in the congressional midterm elections to the consequences of the war with Iran, saying opposition to the conflict drove some voters who backed President Donald Trump in 2024 to shift their support to Democrats.

In a lengthy post on X, Vance argued that the Republican setback was not primarily caused by low turnout among the party’s supporters. Instead, he said, a portion of voters had switched political camps in response to their opposition to the war.

Vance added that Trump shared his assessment, having acknowledged the previous night that the conflict played a significant role in the party’s defeat. However, he maintained that the political price was justified by the war’s stated objective of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Citing polling conducted by his team, Vance outlined four key demands from dissatisfied voters that could help Republicans regain their support: bringing the war to an end, prioritizing the cost of living and inflation, returning to the “America First” agenda, and reconsidering the nature of Washington’s relationship with Israel.

The remarks come after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress, marking a major shift in Washington’s political balance and creating additional legislative hurdles for the Trump administration during the remainder of its term.
