A study by the University of Southern California found that omega-3 supplements did not significantly improve memory or prevent brain shrinkage in older adults at increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
The two-year trial included 365 participants aged 55–80 who received either 2,000 mg of DHA daily or a placebo. Researchers found no significant differences in cognitive performance between the two groups.
The researchers stressed that the findings do not dismiss the value of fish in a healthy diet, but suggest that supplements alone cannot be relied upon to prevent cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease.
