Oman has reaffirmed its efforts to safeguard navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while urging Iran and the United States to resolve their outstanding disputes through a lasting political settlement.
Speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said the conflict that erupted earlier this year following US-Israeli strikes on Iran had affected regional security and disrupted shipping and commercial activity through the strategic waterway.
He said the disruption had also affected energy security and prices, while undermining confidence in the international system.
Albusaidi stressed that Oman would continue supporting safe navigation through the strait in accordance with international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. He called on all parties to cooperate with Muscat to maintain the flow of maritime traffic while taking into consideration the interests of countries dependent on the strategic passage.
The Omani foreign minister also called on Tehran and Washington to address their unresolved disputes and pursue political understandings that could provide a sustainable path out of the crisis.
Albusaidi expressed Oman’s solidarity with neighboring countries and their efforts to protect their security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On Yemen, he reiterated Muscat’s support for a political settlement aimed at preserving the country’s unity, stability and territorial integrity, urging the parties to reach an agreement that safeguards Yemen’s sovereignty and its ties with neighboring states.
