The Iraqi Human Rights Observatory has warned of reports indicating that security bodies may be considering monitoring citizens’ WhatsApp accounts without judicial warrants.
The Observatory said surveillance without judicial oversight would violate Iraq’s Constitution and international obligations, stressing that access to private messages and data must be based on a specific judicial order.
It urged government and security authorities to comply with the law and called on parliament to pass personal data protection legislation. Citizens were also advised to secure their accounts by enabling two-step verification and avoiding suspicious links.
