Iraq's date sector is experiencing a notable resurgence, marked by annual production exceeding 850,000 tons and exports topping 600,000 tons. The expansion of groves and the growth of the national palm count to nearly 22 million—spearheaded by Basra—have restored domestic self-sufficiency, particularly in the widely sought-after Zahdi variety.
While these gains bolster Iraq's regional agricultural standing, the industry's economic reach remains constrained post-harvest. A persistent shortage of modern processing and packaging facilities relative to pre-2003 levels prevents producers from fully capitalizing on the commercial value of their yields.
