Thai authorities declared Bangkok a disaster zone on Saturday after more than 24 hours of heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, inundating roads and several parts of the capital.
Rainfall totals exceeded 150 millimeters in some areas, while the Meteorological Department forecast further thunderstorms and heavy to extremely heavy rain at the start of the coming week.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt warned that the flooding posed a threat to residents’ lives and could result in damage to both public and private property.
Amid the worsening conditions, the government issued an emergency warning to people living near canals, urging them to move their belongings to higher ground as water levels were expected to rise further.
Videos circulating on social media showed vehicles submerged by floodwaters on several roads, while emergency response teams were deployed to assist residents and deal with the impact of the flooding.
