The Boston Symphony Orchestra is preparing to premiere “Already and Not Yet,” a new work by American composer Tod Machover that merges traditional orchestral music with interactive artificial intelligence to examine the evolving relationship between human creativity and technological innovation.

The performances are scheduled to take place at Boston’s Symphony Hall from October 22 to 24, under the baton of conductor Kent Nagano. The composition incorporates an AI system capable of responding to musicians in real time, generating dynamic sound interactions that evolve throughout the performance.

Structured in three movements, the piece explores themes of tension, recovery and collaboration, drawing inspiration from challenges confronting democracy. The project seeks to expand the possibilities of musical expression and foster greater interaction among performers through technology, while maintaining human creativity at the heart of the artistic experience
