Mohammad Hallaq, Chairman of the Economic Sciences Association at the Syrian Chamber of Commerce, highlighted that Syria's removal from the state sponsors of terrorism list provides a vital opportunity to reignite investment and commerce. However, he stressed that maximizing these gains requires urgent banking reforms, legislative updates, and infrastructure modernization.
Hallaq pointed out that land transport will see immediate growth through renewed machinery imports and simplified visa issuance. Yet, increased traffic will further strain deteriorated roads, turning highway rehabilitation into a high-yield investment through cross-border transit fees. Given Syria’s central position linking the Gulf, Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon, upgrading border facilities and separating freight lanes from passenger vehicles are critical to managing trade traffic efficiently.
