Ammar al-Hakim, head of the National State Forces Alliance, stressed on Sunday the need to address the issue of weapons held outside state control, describing it as both a constitutional obligation and a matter of national interest.
Al-Hakim made the remarks during a meeting with Stephen Wigen, the Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Baghdad. The two sides discussed political and security developments in Iraq and the region, as well as prospects for strengthening bilateral relations.
He emphasized that the weapons issue should be addressed through an exclusively Iraqi approach that serves national interests, with mechanisms and timelines set by Iraqi authorities. Al-Hakim also praised the sacrifices and efforts that contributed to the liberation of Iraqi territory and the reinforcement of state authority.
On the economic front, al-Hakim called for diversifying Iraq’s sources of income and oil export routes, while increasing production in line with the country’s resources and population needs. He also pointed to the repercussions of regional crises and the fight against terrorism.
He further urged an end to regional tensions and called for dialogue and mutual understanding as means of resolving disputes and restoring stability.
