U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to establish a dedicated AI Force and create a new position known as the “AI Czar” as part of efforts to strengthen America’s position in the technology sector.
Trump said his administration would not take steps to obstruct the growth of the artificial intelligence industry, reaffirming his support for its development while emphasizing that harmful applications could be addressed through existing criminal and civil laws.
He added that the name of the new adviser would be announced soon and called on individuals with high IQs to seek the position.
Trump described artificial intelligence as a potential new industrial revolution, or an advancement comparable to the rise of the internet but with a much broader impact. He estimated that AI could eventually account for around 25% of the U.S. gross domestic product.
The president maintained that the United States is currently ahead of China and other countries in the field, pledging to preserve that lead.
His announcement comes amid continuing debate in Washington over the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence, while Trump has consistently opposed introducing additional regulatory restrictions on the industry.
At the same time, AI specialists have warned that the technology’s rapid development could carry serious risks, with some researchers raising concerns that its long-term consequences could pose threats to humanity.
