The Baghdad/Rusafa Police Command announced Sunday that two people suspected of involvement in human organ trafficking had been arrested following an intelligence-led investigation.
The command said the operation was conducted by the 10th Security Area commander and the Sadr First Criminal Investigation Department, with intelligence personnel, after receiving information about a man seeking to obtain a passport and leave Iraq to sell one of his kidneys for 14 million Iraqi dinars.
A specialized team was formed to follow up on the case, leading to the arrest of the first suspect after he was lured by investigators. Authorities then arrested a second suspect, who allegedly served as a broker in human organ sales.
During questioning, the second suspect reportedly confessed to involvement in multiple kidney and human organ trafficking operations in coordination with individuals outside Iraq, receiving financial payments as well as travel arrangements and hotel accommodation.
