Iraq’s Military Intelligence Directorate announced on Tuesday that it had foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of narcotics through the western desert, seizing nearly 250,000 pills prepared for trafficking.
The directorate said in a statement that personnel from the Intelligence and Security Department of the 5th Infantry Division, under the supervision of Military Intelligence Director Lieutenant General Hassan Jawad Al-Silawi, intercepted the operation following detailed surveillance.
The seized narcotics had reportedly been prepared for transportation using a hot-air balloon fitted with a tracking device.
The directorate added that the Criminal Evidence Investigations Unit is completing the required legal procedures and preparing official reports before referring the case to the competent authorities in accordance with the law.
