The command of the Counter-Terrorism Regiment in Kirkuk underwent changes on Sunday following an Altun Kupri incident that resulted in the deaths of two civilians during a security operation.

A security source said the regiment’s commander, a lieutenant colonel, was relieved of his duties roughly one week after taking the position. Colonel (A.S.), who previously headed the regiment, was reinstated as its commander.

The source said the changes were part of measures taken in response to the incident, as a government-appointed investigative committee continues examining the circumstances and determining responsibility.

Information circulating about the investigation suggests that one officer and five personnel could face responsibility for alleged shortcomings. However, no official findings have been released so far.

The source stressed that any final measures against those deemed responsible will depend on the committee’s conclusions once its investigation is completed and formally announced.
