Iraq’s Ministry of Transport held talks with Chinese technology giant Huawei on Thursday over the adoption of modern digital technologies to upgrade the country’s maritime transport sector and improve port operations.
According to a ministry statement, a delegation from the ministry, together with Huawei and Uruk Engineering Services, discussed in China the potential deployment of advanced smart solutions as part of digital transformation efforts in Iraq’s transport and port sectors.
The visit included participation in Huawei Connect 2026 in Shanghai, as well as a field visit to Tianjin Port to examine its experience in smart port systems and advanced automation.
The delegation met with Huawei specialists and senior transport-sector personnel to discuss the potential role of technology in automating procedures, improving logistics services and increasing operational efficiency.
During the Tianjin Port visit, the delegation also reviewed practical smart technologies aimed at reducing human intervention, speeding up operations and enhancing the efficiency of port management.
To advance the cooperation toward implementation, the two sides agreed that a specialized Huawei technical team would visit Iraq’s Maritime Transport and Ports Directorate to assess current operations, identify technical and operational needs and determine potential applications for modern technological solutions.
The ministry said the initiative follows directives from Transport Minister Wahab Al-Hassani to expand technical partnerships and benefit from international expertise in developing a more efficient, technology-driven Iraqi transport system.
