Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity announced on Tuesday the signing of cooperation principles with Siemens Energy in Berlin, under the sponsorship of Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi, as part of efforts to expand cooperation in developing the country’s electricity sector, particularly generation and transmission.
The cooperation framework includes new power generation projects, covering both combined-cycle and thermal plants, with the use of advanced, high-efficiency technologies and available fuel resources. Project sites will be selected with consideration for existing infrastructure, transmission networks and fuel pipelines.
In the transmission sector, the agreement provides for establishing new transmission stations in several areas, upgrading existing facilities and tackling bottlenecks affecting the electricity grid. It also seeks to improve the system’s ability to respond quickly to emergency faults.
The cooperation also includes continuing maintenance programs for operating generation plants to improve efficiency and increase available capacity, alongside examining financing options for future projects and implementing training programs to enhance the technical capabilities of Ministry of Electricity personnel.
