Electricity Minister Ali Saadi Waheeb has asked the Finance Ministry to include a provision in the 2027 federal budget to permanently appoint 6,836 electricity meter readers.
The ministry said electricity distribution companies have confirmed their continued need for the workers and that the necessary financial allocations are available. The positions are spread across distribution companies in the North, Baghdad, Central Iraq, the Middle Euphrates and the South.
Waheeb noted that the meter readers have gained practical experience in their field and that their permanent appointment would not place additional financial pressure on the state treasury. He called for their employment status to be addressed in the 2027 federal budget.
