Iraq’s General Directorate for Narcotics Affairs at the Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday that it had foiled an attempt to smuggle 90 kilograms of hashish through Iraqi territorial waters and arrested three foreign nationals.
The directorate said in a statement that the operation was conducted offshore in coordination with the Naval Forces Command and the Military Intelligence Directorate, with support from specialized investigation units, intelligence operations teams and its technical department.
According to the statement, the operation was launched following intelligence received from a neighboring country. The information was analyzed, verified and cross-checked before specialized teams spent 24 hours monitoring the suspects’ movements, eventually identifying their boat, tracking its course and intercepting it.
The operation led to the seizure of 90 kilograms of hashish and the arrest of three foreign suspects. Authorities are continuing intelligence and field operations to locate a fourth suspect who escaped, with efforts underway to apprehend him and refer him to the judiciary.
