The Central Criminal Court in Baghdad on Wednesday sentenced a convicted drug trafficker to death for trafficking in narcotic substances after he was found involved in bringing a large quantity of drugs into the country for distribution.
The Supreme Judicial Council said authorities seized 85 kilograms of narcotics from the defendant, including 489,000 Captagon tablets. The drugs were allegedly smuggled into the country using a hot-air balloon fitted with GPS technology for the purpose of trafficking and distribution.
The ruling was issued under Article 27/First of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017, in conjunction with Articles 47, 48 and 49 of the Penal Code.
