Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture announced on Wednesday new measures to develop the poultry industry and restart inactive projects, while introducing an alternative mechanism for transporting animal feed through land border crossings following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Ministry spokesperson Qusay al-Khattab said feed availability remains one of the main challenges facing poultry businesses. He noted that the ministry is seeking the necessary approvals to facilitate overland feed shipments, while also supporting the establishment of new feed factories and the development of existing domestic facilities to maintain production.

Al-Khattab explained that administrative procedures for renewing poultry project licenses have also been simplified. The number of entities whose approval is required has been reduced from 11 to just two, easing the process for both small and large poultry operators.

He added that the ministry’s recovery plan includes restarting licensed but suspended poultry projects and providing further support to private-sector businesses through the Department of Animal Resources, with oversight from the Veterinary Department, to strengthen domestic production and improve the sector’s overall performance.
