Iran’s Ministry of Energy has introduced a weekly initiative to reduce the use of private vehicles as part of efforts to cut fuel consumption amid mounting pressure on the country’s energy sector.
Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi said the ministry would encourage employees to rely on alternative means of transportation, stressing that government institutions should lead efforts to conserve energy.
The move follows President Masoud Pezeshkian’s directive to designate one car-free day each week across government offices, alongside plans to improve public transportation and expand hybrid vehicle production.
The initiative comes as Iran faces growing energy challenges, driven by declining gas production and rising electricity demand, resulting in supply shortages and recurring outages in several areas.
