Iraq’s Wasit Anti-Narcotics Directorate announced on Thursday the arrest of an Asian national and the seizure of 12 kilograms of opium in a security operation aimed at thwarting a drug-smuggling attempt.
The directorate said intelligence efforts enabled its personnel to infiltrate a trafficking network operating in a neighboring country and track the shipment, as well as the movements of one of the individuals involved, until he entered Iraqi territory.
Security teams subsequently carried out a carefully planned ambush, arresting the suspect and confiscating the narcotics before they reached their intended destination.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt drug-trafficking networks and prevent illegal narcotics from entering and circulating within Iraq
