United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday stressed the need for a multilateral international system based on balance and fair representation, emphasizing the importance of stronger international cooperation.
In his address at the opening of the UN General Assembly, Guterres said competition between countries should not necessarily result in confrontation, but could instead create opportunities to promote stability, cooperation and positive outcomes.
He noted that military strength alone cannot guarantee peace, while economic power by itself is also insufficient to ensure stability, calling for approaches centered on dialogue and cooperation.
Guterres also urged world leaders to take steps toward de-escalation and work to safeguard freedom of navigation and the continued movement of maritime traffic worldwide.
