Iraq’s tournament campaign came to an end after a 2-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia, with the Iraqi side struggling to produce the attacking threat needed to secure qualification.
A draw would have been enough for Iraq to reach the semifinals, but the defeat opened the door for Oman after they secured a 3-1 victory over Kuwait.
Oman moved to four points, matching Iraq in points, goal difference, goals scored and their head-to-head record. With neither side able to be separated by the qualification criteria, a draw was required to determine the semifinalist.
The draw ultimately handed Oman a place in the semifinals, bringing Iraq’s campaign to a dramatic conclusion and leaving its supporters disappointed.
