National Coalition leader Iyad Allawi on Saturday proposed holding a broad national conference bringing together political, national, civil, and social forces, as part of an initiative aimed at addressing Iraq’s political challenges.
The coalition said in a statement that Allawi presented the initiative during an expanded meeting that examined recent political developments, the challenges facing Iraq, and measures to strengthen stability while safeguarding the country’s unity and sovereignty.
The proposal includes establishing a national dialogue body with the participation of Iraqi figures as well as representatives of the United Nations and the Arab League. It also calls for reviewing constitutional provisions and the electoral system, strengthening Iraq’s independent decision-making, and developing balanced relations with regional and international countries.
The initiative also calls for ending political and partisan power-sharing, tackling corruption, protecting public funds, and giving qualified professionals a greater role in managing state institutions. It further emphasizes placing weapons under state control and unifying military and security leadership and decision-making within a clear legal framework.
Allawi said the initiative seeks to correct the course of Iraq’s political process and establish a state based on citizenship, institutions, and the rule of law, with national interests taking precedence over partisan, factional, and personal considerations.
